Kilimanjaro is the gateway to Africa’s rooftop; standing proudly in the northeast of Tanzania, the Kilimanjaro region is not just the home of the tallest mountain but also a vibrant mixture of a wonderful culture, thrilling adventures, and breathtaking landscapes.

This region invites travelers from all around the world to visit the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro and other attractions like the fertile coffee farms rolling down its slopes. If you are a seasoned trekker, a cultural explorer, or even just a photogenic enthusiast, this region welcomes you with a mix of warm hospitality and raw wilderness that comes with it.

Mount Kilimanjaro—The Crown Jewel

Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain. When you climb the mountain, you get the experience of a lifetime, making it not just a simple physical journey but rather a spiritual one. The adventure you experience when passing through five distinct ecological zones—from the tropical rainforest to the alpine desert and ending in a glittering arctic summit—is to die for.

The popular climbing route is the Marangu Route, which is also known as the “Coca-Cola Route.” This is the only one with hut accommodations. Others include:

  • Machame Route – This route has impressive scenery but is challenging. It’s popular with more experienced trekkers.
  • Lemosho Route—This route offers beautiful landscapes and fewer crowds compared to others.
  • Rongai Route—This route approaches from the north. It’s quieter and much drier.
  • Northern Circuit—This is the longest route of all, though it offers excellent acclimatization.
  • Umbwe Route—This route is short and steep, but it’s for experienced climbers.
  • Shira route—This route starts with a high elevation and traverses through the Shira plateau.

The Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro

The best times to climb Mount Kilimanjaro are January to March and June to October, which are known to be the prime climbing seasons, offering clearer skies and better trail conditions.

Our pro tip: For the matter of safety and preparation, Kilimanjaro is non-technical but physically demanding, but fear not, since you will be under our licensed safari guide, who’ll make sure that everything goes smoothly during your visit and stay. On your side, though, just remember to pack for both heat and cold.

Moshi Town—The Base of Adventure

Top Tourist Attractions in Kilimanjaro
Moshi Town

Moshi is the home of the Chaga tribe, having a rich culture. It is a laid-back town with lush surroundings, being the bustling gateway to Kilimanjaro. You will enjoy the Chaga culture museum, where you’ll look into the traditions of the region’s indigenous people. You will also get the chance to visit the coffee farms and learn how the bean-to-cup process takes place. There are also some beautiful and scenic hikes and loud, pouring waterfalls called the Materuni & Ndoro waterfalls. If you like, you can explore local markets for some fresh produce, crafts, and just a walk around the town.

Mkomazi National Park

This park is a hidden gem located between the Same district and the Lushoto district. It’s a remote park with a range of wildlife for you to see, like rhinos and elephants, and some plain savannah landscapes. Here, you can explore plenty of animals, including the Big Five. Yes, Mkomazi Rhino Sanctuary is open to the public for seeing rhinos. Other animals of the Big Five, such as elephants, buffalo, lions, and leopards, are also available.

You can also spot other animals, including giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and impalas. You also have better chances of spotting the African hunting dog because the Tsavo-Mkomazi ecosystem boasts plenty of these canids.

To get to Mkomazi, drive for one hour from Moshi heading eastwards. We highly recommend visiting it during the dry season (June to October) when it’s dry and cool.
