Mara conservancies

Mara conservancies  : The Maasai people coexisted peacefully with the land and its wildlife in the past. Only during a young Maasai warrior’s rite of passage were lions hunted. All of this changed when European hunters learnt about the region and its rich animals. Due to the introduction of hunting safaris, many animals died, and by 1961, the Mara was home to just nine lions. The Masai Mara National Reserve was created in order to aid in the preservation of the area and its fauna. Significant effects have resulted from the conservation initiatives. The Greater Masai Mara ecosystem is among the world’s most abundant safari locations. Learn everything you can about the Masai Mara National Reserve.

Local Maasai leaders felt their way of life undermined by the influx of contemporary safari tourists and Kenya safari organisations, while the region’s fame benefited everyone but its native inhabitants.

As the name suggests, the conservancies protect the land and its fauna. Wildlife conservancies have been established on the majority of the Maasai ranches located east and north of the Masai Mara National Reserve. For a monthly charge, safari organisations and lodges rent the land from the Maasai families who own the conservancies. For every visitor to the wildlife conservancies, safari organisations also pay a daily fee to Maasai landowners.

The Maasai community in the area benefits from these fees, which are typically utilised for educational or other development projects. Once overgrazed by livestock, the land in these conservancies is now being preserved, and in certain places, the wildlife concentration even surpasses that of the Masai Mara National Reserve. Since there are no barriers between the conservancies, animals are allowed to roam freely.

The sense of exclusivity that comes with residing in a conservancy is among its finest qualities. Masai Mara conservancies contain stringent rules, such as a maximum number of beds per square kilometre, which limits the number of tourists permitted to spend the night there in an effort to protect animals and reduce human influence. Each wildlife conservancy has a small number of lodging alternatives, which limits the amount of tourists that can visit the area. Being in the sole safari jeep in sight and being caught in a traffic jam of other jeeps while out and about are two quite different situations.

Maasai Mara Conservancy safaris

The importance of choosing to stay at the Masai Mara conservancies is that you can choose from a wide variety of kenya safari options. There are plenty of kenya safari activities such as night game drives, bush lunches, cultural exchange with the Maasai, and bush hikes are available at the Mara conservancies. This is exclusive to the conservancies and isn’t available when visiting the Masai Mara National Reserve itself. Additionally, the majority of conservancy safari camps provide a day trip to the actual national reserve (with possible additional entrance fees).Since this is best viewed from within the Masai Mara National Reserve, a day safari is essential if you’re planning a trip during the Great Migration. It is not permitted to visit the conservancies during the day when lodging in the Masai Mara National Reserve.
